Happy 4th from our Nation's Capital

Last year was the first year of living in Washington, DC that we stayed home for the 4th of July.  It was hot, congested, and in my opinion, over-rated.

We vowed never to do the 4th in DC again.

But, of course we did.

And guess what?  It was hot, SUPER congested, and in my opinion, still over-rated.

There were no splashes in a refreshing lake or pool.  There were no hot-dogs fresh from the grill.  There were no good, cheesy American songs to be played or cold beers to be drank.

There were, however, hours of waiting. There was scorching heat and suffocating humidity. There were hoards of strangers and swarms of gnats.

But there was also family time, a bucket list that is now one check-mark closer to completion, and one heck of an all-american view for the fireworks.

It wasn't our ideal way to spend the 4th of July, but I don't suppose we could live here for all this time and never make it to the famed firework show.

So, future-mother-in-law-of-mine, thank you for pushing us outside of our comfort zone and ensuring that we participated in this famous 4th of July celebration.  You handled our complaints with the patience of a saint, and we appreciate you overlooking our moments of brattiness.  I'm glad to be able say that we've seen the show.

And to say, with utmost confidence, that I will never do it again ;)

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th celebrating with their loved ones!

i would love to celebrate the 4th in our nation's capitol but the crowds and the humidity would make me want to stay inside, happy belated 4th of July!

I'm reeeally bad with crowds, after awhile I start to freak out a little, so I can understand why you would never want to put yourself through that again ;) Having said that, watching fireworks on the 4th of July in DC must have been at least a little magical :)

Haha, I've had similar experiences! "oh, that was fun... to never do again!" I'm glad you went, so there's no regrets- and now if you're ever asked to go again you can say "hmmm... been there, sweated through that!"

Uggh. It was unbelievably hot yesterday. Not worth it. A lake day would have been much, much better.
